The postdoctoral research associate will be a key member of an ESRC-funded research project “The Impact of Impact: How Research Value is Created and Evaluated in the UK, US and in Australia “. The project will study national research evaluation policies and institutional practices around research impact evaluation.

The postdoctoral research associate will conduct research using impact evidence gathered from the three national evaluation frameworks, providing comparative information on the inputs, outputs and research outcomes that are deemed impactful and valuable. in three countries. The role will provide high quality research and analysis related to the impact of research, with the aim of helping countries develop better research systems.

The postdoctoral research associate will collect and analyze a large volume of primarily qualitative data. Knowledge of data science and mixed methods approaches (eg, content analysis, subject modeling) is highly desirable. The postdoctoral research associate will also lead the publication and dissemination. A genuine interest in understanding research evaluation processes and a broader passion for academic work relevant to policy is essential.

Working with a research team that brings together sociology, research evaluation and public policy, the postdoctoral research associate will be able to use a variety of different disciplinary methodologies and traditions to develop a research agenda that makes a valuable academic contribution but also has strong potential to influence policies that determine how impact is measured and how publicly funded research is governed.

This position will be offered on a 12-month fixed-term contract.

This is a position and is a 100% full-time equivalent role / flexible working hours will be considered.

Main responsibilities

• Conduct research and mixed methods analysis for a research impact project

• Produce high quality academic publications and results (eg journal articles, blogs, conference presentations)

• Contribute to the development of research policy through a wider dissemination of ideas and analyzes

Analysis and research:

• Use a mix of social scientific methods relevant to the project, including rapid literature reviews and mixed-method analyzes of publicly available impact case data

• Write or contribute to publications and disseminate research results

• Conduct individual or collaborative research on projects, within a team but requiring a high degree of academic independence

Communication and networking:

• Excellent written and oral communication skills are required, including the delivery of a range of outcomes to ensure clarity and accessibility of complex content (eg journal articles, conference presentations, policy recommendations)

• Excellent ability to engage with stakeholders and project participants (including researchers, research funders, experts and policy makers)

Decision making, planning and problem solving:

• Contribute to the identification and resolution of the development needs of the project

• Collaborate with other members of the research team on the design, delivery and dissemination of research and analysis

• Collaborate with colleagues from King’s and other institutions, as appropriate

• Work with a range of stakeholders including academics, experts, policy makers

• Contribute to reporting and communication with project partners

• Act as a responsible member of the team, helping to shape and lead teamwork and the development of productive working relationships with others

• Engage with colleagues and activities in collaborating institutions, as appropriate

• Engage with King’s colleagues to ensure cross-partnership ties

Skills, knowledge and experience

Essential criteria


1. Doctorate in a relevant field, or equivalent experience

Knowledge / skills

2. Experience working in social science research, with experience in research policy, sociology of evaluation, data science or similar desirable

3. The ability to communicate effectively with academics, experts and policy makers, both in person and in writing

4. Enthusiasm to work across borders in a large international project

6. Experience in the use of analysis software, with R and qualitative software (eg Atlas.ti, Nvivo) desirable

7. Experience in writing literature reviews, data analysis and findings for publication in academic media

9. Ability to work independently and to show initiative in daily work
