Apple’s stunning iPhone 14 design decision suddenly makes sense

Apple is taking a big gamble with the iPhone 14 which I predict will irritate a lot of users. But now we know why…

According to a new TrendForce report (seen by MacRumors), controversial claims that Apple is equipping the iPhone 14 with the same A15 chip used in the iPhone 13 aren’t entirely accurate. The research claims that a subtle but important upgrade will be made.

TrendForce reports that the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will receive a 50% increase in RAM compared to the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini 2021:

  • iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Mini: 4 GB (LPDDR4X)
  • iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max: 6 GB (LPDDR4X)

This increased RAM is what Apple used in the iPhone 13 Pro models, meaning Apple can market the iPhone 14 with “pro-level performance” at a more affordable price. Also, that extra RAM has very clear real-world advantages in testing and I have a feeling Apple will pair it with the iPhone 13 Pro’s 5-core GPU versus the iPhone 13 Pro’s 4-core GPU. iPhone 13.

Yes, technically it’s still last year’s hardware, but at least there are tangible increases – which will be crucial if Apple does indeed consider controversially renaming the chip.

On the other hand, the performance gap between the iPhone 14 Pro and non-Pro models always seems set to widen. Indeed, the second part of the TrendForce report claims that Apple will upgrade the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max to LPDDR5 RAM, which is 1.5 times faster (6400 Vs 4266 Mbps) than LPDDR4x while being more energy efficient.

Add to that the move from Pro models to a new A16 chip, and “going Pro” will mean much more in 2022 than in any previous iPhone generation. Other exclusives to the iPhone 14 Pro model include a new design, improved cameras, and – a significant price increase.

Despite all this, regulatory changes likely to be imposed on Apple in 2023 mean that I would personally avoid all iPhone models this year. But I understand that it will be hard to resist the lure of the new iPhone 14 Pros.
